James Johnston
I’m a retired NHS psychiatrist and psychoanalyst and my sculpture and painting reflect my ongoing interest in mental health. My work reflects human brokenness and the challenges of change.
My sculptures depict the precariousness of life in different ways, with figures on the brink of falling, emerging and flying, conveying both fragility and conflicted transformation. My sculpture and painting echo the complex challenges in the experience of helping and being helped.
I’m trying to show the dilemmas inherent in human suffering and transformation and the three dimensional form of sculpture communicates the visceral embodiment of experience in a way which hopefully provokes resonance and reflection in the observer.
