I want to prod at the underbelly, draw out edges of discomfort and the uncomfortable, manifest the magical and rediscover the mythic which I think is latent in us all, so I work to experience that energy of surprise and wonder when that is revealed through process. My work is painting, drawing and sculptural ceramics.  These media combine and work in interaction with one another. I aim to introduce processes that will trigger new processes so that the whole creative act is in constant movement and fluidity. I often make to music or at least try to switch off my rational mind when I start a project, allowing as Sandy Brown says ‘the hands to do the work’. From initial markmaking, I look at areas of interest that can be drawn out and usually there’s a narrative or connection that emerges or emanates the more I work on the piece. The aim therefore is to be less in control of the visual outcome and link spontaneous, embodied making with refining my knowledge of what the clay body and the glazes can do.
