199 Jane Yarnall Warming Planet

Jane Yarnall

My sculptural forms are inspired by the link between science and nature.  With a background in genetics, I am particularly fascinated by the formation of proteins and the irregular patterns and shapes the strands and coils make.  I aim to combine this internal view of living matter, with a contemporary take on the presented natural form.

The construction process often begins with a simple strand of extruded clay, which is then hand-built into more complex shapes, using coiling or formas for support.  Glazes and engobes are added to provide interest and contrast the different component before the pieces are refired to stoneware temperatures.

Much of my work derives from research using 3D scientific modelling software and databases.  However other pieces emerge in the making process using similar components.  For these emergent forms, I have developed a unique method of construction, which entails assembling each extruded clay component in a linear fashion before ‘folding’ the pieces together.  With no defined top or bottom, freeze-framing the structure in this way enables the changing dimensionality to be explored.
