Ian Knight

I am a Bristol-based research-led artist and have recently completed an MA degree in Fine Art (Ceramics) at Bath Spa University. My works and research are centred around sustainable practices in ceramics, and I am always seeking out new creative opportunities using readily available materials from nature. I am increasingly turning to the use of locally sourced ‘wild clays’ which I collect, process, test and then use to create work that I fire at low earthenware temperatures. I also experiment with the incorporation of local rock into glaze recipes. I strive to use the source location and provenance of available materials to drive storytelling within my practice.

I am particularly drawn to forms, colours and textures found in nature, with a particular interest in botanical and geological forms, an interest that reaches back to my B.Sc degree education in Geographical Sciences during my younger years.

My ceramic work is often guided by the aesthetic principles of Japanese ceramics as popularised through their connection with the Japanese tea ceremony tradition. My works are created using hand-building techniques including coiling and the Japanese carving technique known as Kurinuki.
